YouTubers react to the Rio Ferdinand v SaeedTV Instagram row

The Daily Mail, the Mirror and GiveMeSport report Rio Ferdinand's Instagram reply to SaeedTV. Saeed answers in 15 minutes, two friends and a West Ham fan weigh in, and an Arsenal fan watches from the stands. Ferdinand has not responded in the reporting we've seen.

YouTubers react to the Rio Ferdinand v SaeedTV Instagram row

It started under a press-conference quote. On Friday Rio Ferdinand shared a picture with Michael Carrick and the line that Manchester United are "bigger than any individual". SaeedTV commented: "Stop yapping and call out the owners!" Ferdinand's reply, which the Daily Mail and the Mirror print with asterisks, was a crude dig at Saeed's chest and breathing. The Daily Mail and the Mirror call it a "fat-shaming" row, and GiveMeSport reports the backlash. By Friday night creators were reacting.

A word on how this piece works, because it's a personal row, and because SaeedTV is one of the creators in our own directory. Everything below is attributed, either to the outlets or to the creators saying it. In the reporting we've read there is no reply or apology from Ferdinand, so this is mostly one side of the story. Nobody has told us what he meant.

Saeed answers on camera

Saeed's answer was a 15-minute upload called "Exposing Rio Ferdinand!", according to the Mirror and GiveMeSport. He calls the reply "absolutely embarrassing", says Ferdinand is 47 with "kids watching", and stresses that his own comment was respectful: "no swearing, none of that."

The video is really about the owners. "I ask you to call out the owners and this is what you come with? Astonishing." The Daily Mail reports that Saeed argues Ferdinand stays quiet to keep his access to the club. Saeed goes further than the reporting in places. Those claims are his account, we've seen no reply, and we're not repeating them. The Daily Mail adds, in fairness to Ferdinand, that he has criticised the club's ownership on select occasions. One line from Saeed sticks: "Let me not get to his level because I'm better than that."

A friend, with the disclaimer up front

Staffy TV opens with a conflict warning. "I know [Saeed] personally and I have a personal friendship with him. But I am trying to put that aside and just be as fair as possible." The channel also says it disagrees with most of Saeed's opinions and that the pair argue about them all the time.

Fair is what it tries to be. Staffy TV calls the reply "a bit classless" and says nothing Saeed wrote was "malicious enough to warrant a response like that". It gives the other side too: some people ask what Saeed expected after telling someone to stop yapping, and that, it says, "kind of warrants a clapback". It doesn't buy it. Criticism of a creator, in its view, should never be about "someone's looks". Then comes the fan point: Saeed, it says, is a match-going season-ticket holder, and "fans are the lifeline of a club".

Answer the question

Alice Talks Football gives the row the opening stretch of a longer live, before it moves on to Martinez, the owners and Sunday's trip to Leeds. Its view is simple. "It was just a football opinion. So Rio should respond with a footballing opinion." The stream calls the reply "a little bit immature for a 47 year old man" and "giving faceless 17-year-old kind of reply".

It's careful not to cast Saeed as a saint. The stream says it and Saeed disagree about plenty, Bruno Fernandes included, and that fans can respect that. The complaint is about the dodge. "Why don't you actually answer the bit he's asking you?" On this telling, a question about the owners got an answer about something else.

Online abuse is the theme

TurkishLDN takes the wide-angle view, and starts somewhere you might not expect: the abuse Ferdinand himself gets online, which it calls "nothing short of disgusting". Then comes the Instagram reply. "It was unnecessary. It was low." The host also notes that Ferdinand is "not a professional anymore" but "a YouTuber like us".

Two of the creators here say they are friends with Saeed, and TurkishLDN is the other: "I do feel like I have to back my boy." The sign-off is the bit worth keeping. Online abuse won't stop, the host says, but "we can play our part in ignoring it", and in "calling it out when we need to, like today, like now."

The West Ham angle

MikeZ declares an interest before getting going. A West Ham fan, with "a bit of an ulterior motive" where Ferdinand is concerned, on a channel still chasing 2,000 subscribers. Fair warning, then. The argument is the same one, though. If those words were aimed at a United player, MikeZ says, "you'd be calling it abuse".

MikeZ's wider gripe, in a video we haven't embedded because its thumbnail is a screenshot of the comments, is with how pundits and the big outlets treat fans, and it ends with a direct ask: "You have to apologize." Some of the language in the video goes further than the reporting does, so we've stuck to the argument about the reply itself.

Popcorn, and a view from the Emirates end

Not everyone treated it as a crisis. Pazz watched Saeed's upload live with the popcorn out, said Saeed "better get personal in this video", and kept pausing it to react. Saeed's own line, he says, was the one about not getting to Ferdinand's level.

DeludedGooner is an Arsenal channel, the shortest clip here, and upfront about it: "I love Man United as Arsenal fan." It borrows a tweet ("Imagine we was robbed at football and one of our legendary defenders was arguing with YouTubers") and lands on the same verdict as most of the room: "You're bogus for that." The channel also calls it "cheap shots".

The argument

None of the creators we watched defends the reply. The argument is about what the row is *for*. Saeed wants it to be about the owners. Staffy TV and Alice Talks Football want Ferdinand to answer the question he was asked. TurkishLDN wants it to be about how people treat each other online. The Daily Mail and the Mirror both report that fans are split, with some saying Saeed started it by telling Ferdinand to "stop yapping". "He was disrespectful first so got disrespect back," one wrote. Ferdinand has said nothing in the reporting we've read. Sunday brings Leeds at Elland Road, and the question Saeed put under that Carrick post is still the one every creator here keeps coming back to.
